Electric mopeds for adults?

We will study the Electric mopeds for adults on each of the following criterion. Using a750 watt motor and 48 volt battery  the same as we use in the Evolts L3 parents series electric moped.

We will cover the following:
  1. Performance and durability
  2. Gears
  3. Battery type comparison
  4. Brakes
  5. Frame and Comfort
  6. Visibility electric mopeds
  7. Uses of the electric moped

1.  Performance and durability

Motor for the latest electric moped.Latest electric moped in 2020 2

To fully understand why the performance and durability is better we will give you an overview of two-wheel electric drive motors.

Some electric mopeds are driven by chain or belt however the majority of electric moped motors are hub style motor (built into the wheel). We will show the differences between these motors in the internal structure as well as the durability. The main difference between the motor is the driving principle.
In most cases the Electric Bike motor principle is to assist with people pedaling first and the motor  is the secondary propulsion method.
The Electric Moped motor is the main propulsion method with pedaling the secondary method to assist the Motor.

What are the Electric Moped Motor types?

Evolts electric Mopeds, use a hub motor system, which is a relatively simple operation.
The motor is generally considered the main propulsion system with the pedals used as assistance if needed or as a method of getting exercise
The system uses an axle with the main magnets at the center, the wheel has the hall system built in to ensure the wheel spins around the axle. To increase the power rating in an electric moped motor you generally need to use bigger magnets this will increase the current and supply more power. This system is called brush-less meaning there are no parts touching, unlike other electric motors where an armature and brushes are used.

After 4 years of work, Evolts has just completed one of the first fully water-resistant electric moped motors by using a new seal system that repels the water from entering the center seals.

Electric moped motors are more durable?

Since there are generally no gears in the Electric moped motor it is relatively quiet. The brush-less system has no parts touching each other to create wear to the internal parts. The penetration of water previously was the main problem for this type of motor. It is not unusual to have these electric mopeds motors usually able to do 60,000 miles or 100,000 km without needing servicing internally.

2.   Gears for electric mopeds.

Are there gears available for an electric moped?

Latest electric moped in 2020 3Generally, electric mopeds do not have gears or adjustable power other than using the throttle.
This is not usually a problem unless you are learning to ride or learning to ride after a long break since the last time you rode a two-wheeler or even using the Electric moped at slower speeds.

Most Electric Mopeds use a full-throttle, meaning it is the full width of the Hand-grip.
This helps you to keep control at slower speed.
Many people learning, re-learning or using the electric moped at slower speed requested a method to have greater control over the power.
The Evolts series 3 electric mopeds were specially developed to enable you to be able to match your outdoor activity to the required power, speed, and range.
With switchable 3 speed technology it is one of the world’s first walking bikes, meaning it can be ridden while accompanying someone at walking speed.

The difference to other systems is, you now have the full-throttle range.
When you turn the throttle the power or speed is changed according to the gear you selected.
Level 1 has a top speed of 5 MPH so moving the throttle has very small changes in power or speed.
Level 3 has full power so by turning the throttle, you will have 4 times  the amount of change in power and speed than on level 1.

3.   Battery comparison between electric bikes and electric moped

For the latest electric mopeds the main factors in choosing a battery type according to the cost, requirement for speed, climbing ability, range, and battery life.
All these factors should have bearing on the choice of the Battery Pack for the model you want to use.

If you want to ride longer distances and need to do more climbing the larger Lithium battery would probably best suit your needs for the electric moped for adults.

Electric moped of batteries available?

Latest electric moped in 2020 4Electric Mopeds generally have more space for the battery and in most cases it is designed to fit the frame design.
Many electric mopeds for adults are now fitted with Lithium batteries.
This is done to reduce the weight of the electric moped, however, if you do not use your electric moped very often or do not need frequently removable battery the economical Silica GEL.
Silica gel batteries for electric mopeds have about 90% of the range of the same specification Lithium battery, but with about 40% of the cost.
Silica gel batteries can be a cheaper entry to electric mopeds.
In many cases, you can perform a battery upgrade at a later date if you decide to upgrade to Lithium battery.
Note: Keep in mind you may also need a different charger as different batteries use different charging cycles.

Some Evolts electric mopeds are fitted standard with an economical Silica Gel battery.
This is less expensive to purchase your electric moped with the added advantage of being much less expensive to replace after years of use.
If most of the usage of the electric scooter is at lower speed and you are not riding for longer distances this battery type is adequate.
The Silica Gel batteries are Inert and present no fire hazard, although they are heavier than the Lithium batteries.
Lithium batteries for electric mopeds generally have a bigger capacity and start at 14 AH.

What is the size of the battery recommended for your electric mopeds?
The Silica gel battery starts at 12 AH this is adequate for reasonably level ground and for shorter distances.

For longer distances, it is recommended to use a lithium battery where it is possible to get a bigger capacity battery.
Some options are as follows:

  • The 14ampH lithium battery, is a lighter and has about 10% more range than the silica gel battery.
  • The 20 ampH lithium battery, that adds about 40% range from the standard Silica gel battery for people needing extended range.
  • The 26 ampH lithium battery, that doubles the range from the standard 14 ah Silica gel battery, for people needing extended range or do not want to charge the battery as often.

Other considerations: The advantage of all these batteries is they can be charged on the electric moped by using the charging point under the rear rack.
The battery can also be removed from the electric Moped for adults to be swapped or charged off the moped.
The battery is located under the seat and it required a key to open the seat to remove the battery, so it is less likely to be stolen.

What Is A Electric Moped?

Technically, some electric moped are classed as electric bikes and are a smaller type of moped with pedals. Their general structures are pretty similar, it’s just that the electric mopeds have pedals to assist the motor and are smaller and made to be more maneuverable.

Mopeds were originally made for riding on the road at speeds up to 30 MPH for class 1 or above for class 2. Electric mopeds are small, easy to ride and comparatively cheap, so they are becoming more and more popular. Nowadays, they are becoming popular transport, much like electric bikes. The difference is they, are specifically designed for people that find electric bikes uncomfortable or difficult to ride.

Electric mopeds are especially popular with people who are heavier or have bigger bodies, who are less athletic and older people. Though there are a lot of other adult riders who enjoy them and some who even prefer them to electric bikes. Electric mopeds are also an alternative for people looking at three or four wheel Mobility scooters, they are more maneuverable and can be a good alternative for people with hip or knee problems.

Electric Mopeds vs. Electric Bikes

Electric Mopeds 101. What Are They and are they right for me? 10

There are a few main differences between electric mopeds and electric bikes.
The first is the seat height is generally lower , this is mostly to allow people to put their feet on the ground easier. Also the seat is generally much wider and they come with full suspension which is generally an extra on electric bikes.
The frame is also different while some have a center bar across from the seat to the steering stem many use a U shaped frame to make them easier to get on and off.
Electric bikes usually weigh much less than electric mopeds but also have a less powerful motor so the performance can usually be similar.

Electric mopeds generally have a more sturdy frame than electric bikes.
They will often be fitted with additional features that come from regular mopeds like horn, front and rear lights as standard.
They can also be fitted with foot pegs for an extra person and still have a rear rack for luggage. They may also be fitted with indicator lights and hazard lights.

Though they are technically classified as electric bikes, electric mopeds have a different principal for the operation of the bike.
Electric bikes generally have pedals as the main method of power and the electric motor assists the person pedaling.
Electric Mopeds use the motor as the main method of power and the pedals assist the use of the motor on very steep hills or for exercise.

It’s also possible to use both electric bikes and electric mopeds as street legal in most states. So they require no registration fees and you do not need a license to use them.

We have an more in depth comparison with electric moped vs electric bikes here

Are they expensive?

Electric mopeds are cheaper than many of the expensive electric bikes, so they really present really good value for money. They are competitively priced because they are not designed to be have huge batteries which can add a lot to the price of electric two wheel.

A lot of the value comes from the standard features compared to electric bikes.
Generally, with items like:

  • disc brakes,
  • front suspension
  • rear suspension,
  • front lights,
  • rear lights
  • horn
  • indicator lights
  • hazard lights
  • seating for two,
  • rack for luggage
are included in the price. In electric bikes these could be considered extras if they are available.

Electric Mopeds are built very sturdy and require very little maintenance so this also represents great value for money.

One of the advantages is, if you do not do long distances or use it all the time  they can still be fitted with Silicon gel batteries.
Compared to the lithium batteries on the electric bikes, this makes them inexpensive to replace the battery and keeps the running expenses low.

Should I Get A Electric Moped?

Even though many people look at electric bikes, the electric moped is a viable alternative.
In fact for many people it is even better way to get outdoors and lead a more active life.
They can be ridden in the same conditions that a electric bike can, there are a few reasons why you might want to buy one.

First of all, they are great beginner bikes, and that doesn’t just apply to younger adults. If you’ve ever ridden any kind of bike before, a electric moped is a good way to get a feel for things again.

Because you’ll be riding at slower speeds and on a bike that is more comfortable with more control – you’re less likely to hurt yourself while you’re learning how to balance and turn.

The price tag on a expensive electric bike can be a turn-off, especially if you don’t plan on having the time to go riding it every day. The good news is that anyone who doesn’t necessarily have the cash or time to commit to an expensive electric bike can have a lot of enjoyment on a electric moped instead! You can still ride it on paved or beginner trails or you can also just take it for a spin around your neighborhood.

Overall, a electric moped can be a great investment if you’re just going back to riding or don’t want to commit to a full-size electric bike.
It is a great alternative to a three or four wheel electric mobility scooter and in the meantime, you’ll have a lot of fun for less money and hassle.

Motor for electric bike and electric moped comparison

Motor-comparison-bike-vs-moped

There are several motors for electric bikes. Ranging from center motors with gearing to hub motors. Electric moped motors are generally hub style motor (built into the wheel). We will show the differences between these motors in the internal structure as well as the durability. The main difference between the motor is the drive principal. In many cases the Electric Bike motor is to assist with people pedaling first and the motor  is the secondary propulsion method. The Electric Moped motor is the main propulsion method with pedaling the secondary method to assist the Motor.

What are the Electric Bike Motor types?

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 11

Electric bike motors can be Hub Motor (built into the wheel) or center motor attached to the crank in the center of the bike. Both are considered secondary drive systems or pedal assist. Meaning the pedals are the main propulsion and the motor is used to assist with the power. Most electric bikes have gears to assist with the hills and in most cases buttons to adjust the amount of power to help with pedaling. Hub motors generally are single speed but there are some cases they have internal gears. Center motors are geared but also use the chain or belt t the gear assembly to change the amount of power.

Are the electric bike motors Durable?

Until recently both hub and center motors were 250 watt to conform to regulations in Europe. Over the past few years they have increased in power, the difficulty is the space available and the type of materials. Most have internal drives which present the biggest problem. The metal drives are noisy and the popular Nylon ones seem to have durability problems in the bigger power motors. While they do last longer if you use more pedal power, there have been issues with some high power Electric Bike Motors

What are the Electric Moped Motor types?

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 12Electric Mopeds for adults, use a hub motor system, which is relatively simple operation. The motor is generally considered the main propulsion system with the pedals used as assistance if needed or as a method of getting exercise The system is a axle with the main magnets at the center, the wheel has the hall system built in to ensure the wheel spins around the axle. This system is called brush-less meaning there are no parts touching. Unlike other electric motors where an armature and brushes are used. Power increases are generally by using bigger magnets to be able to increase the current to supply more power. Evolts has just completed one of the first water resistant electric moped motors by using a new seal system that repels the water from entering the center seals.

Are electric moped for adults motors Durable?

Since there are generally no gears in the Electric moped motor it is relatively quiet. The brush-less system has no parts touching each other to create wear to the internal parts. Penetration of water previously was the main problems for this type of motor. It is not unusual to have these electric mopeds for adults motors able to do 60,000 miles or 100,000 km without needing servicing internally.

2.   Gears for electric bikes and electric mopeds for adults comparison.

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 13The gears and assistance method varies from Electric Bike to electric moped for adults. Because electric bikes often use gear cassettes and  power changes they are more complicated. Generally the throttle is half throttle or thumb throttle. Electric mopeds for adults generally do not have gears or the ability to change the power or speed. The throttles are usually on the right hand side and use the full width of the hand grip.

What are the Electric Bike Gears types?

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 14

The electric bike gears are generally split between gear cassettes on the rear wheel and the assistance on for the motor. For the bike gears there is generally a button or sliding trigger method to adjust the gears while you pedal. The throttle is usually a half hand grip version usually operated with the thumb and finger. For many people this system can get complicated with the up button, the down button, the throttle and operating the brake all with one hand. The half throttle can be difficult for long distances, if you are older or have any arthritic conditions. For the motor assist this is generally buttons on the LED or LCD speedometers. These adjustments are usually adjustments to the pedal pressure or the speed of the crank being turned rather than adjusting the actual power and speed.

What are the types of Electric Moped for adults Gears?

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 15 Electric mopeds usually do not have gears or adjustable power other than using the throttle. This is usually OK if you are not learning or using the Electric moped at slower speeds. Most Electric Mopeds for adults have a full throttle that is the full width of the Hand-grip. This helps to keep control at slower speed. Many people learning, re-learning or using the electric moped at slower speed asked for a method to have more control over the power. The Evolts series 3 electric moped for adults was especially developed to enable you to be able to match your outdoors activity to the required power, speed and range. With the switchable 3 speed technology it is one of the worlds first walking bike, meaning it can be ridden while accompanying someone at walking speed. The difference to other systems is, you have the full throttle range. This means when you turn the throttle the changes in power or speed is changed according to the gear you selected. Level 1 has a top speed of 5 MPH so the throttle has very small changes in power or speed. Level 3 has full power so turning the throttle will have 4 times  the amount of change of power and speed than level 1.

3.   Battery comparison between electric bikes and electric moped

For both electric bike and Electric Mopeds for adults the main factors in choosing a battery type are the following, cost, speed, climbing ability, range and battery Life. All of these factors should have bearing on the choice of the Battery Pack necessary for the model you want to use. If you want to ride longer distances and need to do more climbing the a larger Lithium battery would probably best suit your needs for either the electric bike or the electric moped for adults.

What are the electric bike Battery types?

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 16Most batteries for Electric bikes are Frame mounted, Cartridge or tube mounted. Generally the batteries for electric bikes are Lithium using 18650 cells. Voltage: More advanced electric bikes for 750 watt come with 48 volts to be able to give you torque power for climbing hills. The greater the volts the greater the torque. Amperage: Amp-hours generally equate to the storage capacity of the battery, similar to a gas tank. The more amp-hours you have, the more range you will get with your electric bike. The hours in amp-hours means how many amps there are per hour of usage. Often, you’ll see 8AH, 10AH, 12AH batteries. We recommend a minimum of 10AH battery as this is enough to get your around 30-40 miles of flat or slightly hilly usage if you also use the pedals. Size of battery required for your electric bike? The amount of power from the battery on your electric bike is supplied by the controller. The volts and Amperage you need will depend on your weight, terrain, and cargo. If you are 120-220 pounds and plan on riding flat terrain you can get a medium capacity battery. However, if you live in a hilly city or you are over 220 pounds using a a 750 Watt electric bicycle you should invest in the largest AMP battery you can afford. Other considerations:  Other things you need to consider is charging your battery and security of the battery from theft. Some batteries need a lot of effort to charge, some will be able to be charged on the bike and some will need to be removed. Theft of batteries is also an issue, since the electric bike battery can sometimes be half the value of the bike, making sure it can be locked on to the bike securely is also an issue.

Electric moped for adults types of batteries available?

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 17Electric Mopeds generally have more space for the battery and it is built into the frame design. Many electric mopeds for adults are now fitted with Lithium batteries. This is done to reduce the weight of the electric moped for adults, however if you do not use your Electric Moped often or do not need a removable battery the economical Silica GEL. Silica gel batteries for electric mopeds have about 90% of the range of the same specification Lithium battery with about 40% of the cost. It can be an cheaper entry to electric mopeds for adults and in many cases you can perform a battery upgrade at a later date if you decide to upgrade to Lithium battery. Note: Keep in mind you may also need a different charger as different batteries use different charging cycles. Some Evolts electric moped for adults comes standard with a Economical Silica Gel battery. This is less expensive to purchase your electric moped for adults and also much less expensive to replace after years of use. If most of the usage of the adult electric scooter is at lower speed and not very long distance this battery type is adequate, for this type of use. The Silica Gel batteries are Inert and present no fire hazard, although they are heavier than the Lithium batteries. Lithium battery for electric mopeds are generally bigger than the ones available for electric bikes. For example the lithium batteries for the Evolts electric mopeds for adults start at 14 AH a battery that is mid size on most electric bikes. Size of battery Required for your electric mopeds for adults? The Silica gel battery starts at 12 AH this is adequate for reasonably level ground and for shorter distances. For longer distances it is recommended to use a lithium battery where it is possible to get a bigger capacity battery. S ome options are as follows: The 14ampH lithium battery, is a lighter and has about 10% more range than the silica gel battery. The 20 ampH lithium battery, that adds about 40% range from the standard Silica gel battery for people needing extended range. The 26 ampH lithium battery, that doubles the range from the standard 14 ah Silica gel battery, for people needing extended range or do not want to charge the battery as often.

4.   Comparison of Brakes for electric bikes and Electric mopeds for adults.

Having power is important but even more important is having brakes that do not just match the power but exceed the stopping power necessary for all terrain and weight loads. Both electric bikes and electric Mopeds for Adults should be fitted with cut-out switches on the brake levers, this is necessary to cut the power to the motor when you stop. Some electric bikes and electric street legal mopeds also have battery regeneration systems that assist to slow the electric bike or electric moped while recharging the battery.   New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 18

What types of Electric Bike brakes and the differences?

Electric bikes brakes are generally cable with upgrade to Hydraulic. Over the past several years Disc is the minimum standard. The size of the brake disc is important when choosing the power of the electric bike since it will make a huge difference in making sure you can stop as necessary. All electric bikes should be fitted with cut-out switches on the brake levers, this cuts the power while applying the brakes.   New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 19

5.   Frame and comfort comparison between electric bike and electric moped.

The difference between Electric bikes and Electric mopeds for adults is most evident in the frame and comfort. Most electric bikes are made with alloy frames and are sparse with their standard features. Such as lighting, mudguards, carrying luggage,  and protection from the elements. Electric Mopeds for adults has many standard features that are upgrades on electric bikes.

Electric bikes frame types.

New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 20There are many different types of frames for electric bikes from folding electric bikes to large fat tire electric bikes. Previously frames they were mainly made of Steel but over time alloy frames have become the normal electric bikes. Many types of frames now include the battery integrated into the frame or even inside the frame. Electric bike frames are mainly produced to reduce weight, with electric bikes for males generally having a vertical bar from the seat post to the handle bar post. Ladies electric bikes usually use a U shape, the frames need reinforcing to be able to absorb the flex from the weight. The frames for electric bikes are generally taller and have a higher seat position, and base of the frame further from the ground to allow for the pedal crank. Electric bike frames are generally built for single seat unless they are specifically built as a dual bike. They do not usually have racks or storage built into the frame.

Electric bike Comfort factors.

Electric bike comfort is based on suspension, tires and different types of seat. Electric bike Suspension: While many bikes are now fitted with front suspension, rear suspension is generally for Mountain bikes. The suspension used is built more for performance and taking out sharp jolts rather than a true comfort factor. There are also seat post suspension that is fitted to the seat post to take some of the shock from the road or other surface. Electric bike Tires: Electric bike tires can vary according to the type of electric bike and the usage. Starting with electric road bikes the tire is smaller diameter to be able to maintain speed, these type of tires do not offer much cushioning when you ride. Electric Mountain bike style tire have a greater diameter, these tires have a smoother ride, these are usually matched to suspension to take some of the jolts from uneven surfaces. So called Fat wheel tires, the biggest diameter tires are the last category. These will slow the progress or need more power to operate but they provide more cushioning while riding. New Electric Mopeds for adults vs Electric Bike comparison 21Electric bike seats: The seats also vary according to the purpose of the electric bike, for road bike the seat is generally narrow to ensure less friction to the inside of the leg and allow pedaling at higher speed. Mountain bike seats generally a little wider and more padding. Other seats can be gel filled seats (as pictured which are wider and have can absorb some of the shock

Although they are similar electric two wheel vehicles, the usage and the type of people using them can be different. Electric bikes are better suited to younger (16-30 years old) more athletic riders, who require less comfort and better performance. The basic principal is to pedal and use the electric motor as assistance to go faster or further with less effort. Electric Mopeds for adults have been designed for less athletic people generally older, heavier or less mobile due to medical conditions or age. Where control and comfort are more important than high performance. The general concept is to be ridden using the motor and using the pedals as assistance to the motor.

Use for Electric bikes.

Electric bikes are lightweight transport method, able to be ridden up to 20 MPH by motor and above when assisted by the pedals, in most states without license or registration required.

Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters

Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters

What are moped style seniors custom mobility scooters?

Custom mobility scooters are two wheel electric mobility scooters built specifically for Seniors.
Designed and built to offer an alternative to traditional three and four wheel electric mobility scooter.
With one of the world first 3 speed control, of speed, power and range.
With the latest 2 wheel design that is easy to ride and has full suspension and a wide comfortable seat.

Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters 32

Why did you design custom mobility scooters?

As a designer and manufacturer of two-wheel vehicles for 20 years.

We recognized most models were not really designed for the heavier body shape of the less athletic or older generation.
Or for senior’s or people with knee or Hip problems that restrict walking, it seemed the choice was three or four-wheel mobility style scooters.
There was not much available between, two wheel electric bikes and traditional three or four wheel mobility scooters.
“Even though people are getting older, most do not see themselves using these just to get outdoors.”

We began working on electric bikes, but we found, they just did not seem to be designed for comfort and ease of use.
Especially if you have knee or hip problems.
The ride was hard with the suspension seemingly geared towards athletic people with performance important rather than comfort.
The seats were uncomfortable for anyone who is slightly larger in stature, after 10 minutes it was is numb backside time.

We decided to make new 2 wheel design custom mobility scooters!

From our experience we thought the answer must be somewhere between an electric bike and an electric moped.
We spoke to many people who would like to be able to be outdoors,
Many were restricted with hip and knee problems using a bike is difficult because of the top bar is not easy to get your leg over.
We studied some moped-style bikes coming out with wider seats and some suspension, but they also had a bar that required lifting your leg over the bar, so this also limited the usefulness.

Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters 33Finally we decided to customize our existing Moped.

In 2015 we designed a moped-style bike with all the safety of a moped but with functioning pedals that you could use to get some exercise if required.
The model is easy to get on and off, easy to touch the ground when stationary, with a wide seat so  NO numb Backside. and full suspension

The models proved popular in the U.S.A. especially for younger people, but we found we would need to customize it as there were still some issues for older people or people with health related mobility problems.

The issues with the existing model !

The battery was Silicon Gel, which although good value for money is slightly heavy for the older generation.
Another big issue was the learning curve riding an electric-assist pedal bike.
Many people have not ridden a bike for many years.
This model was just too powerful to make it easy to control while relearning.
We got feedback that pedaling which is ineffective at a higher speed.
When the rider wanted some exercise by pedaling it was not easy to balance the use of the pedals and the motor.

The feedback that gave us an in depth explanation of the problem.

We got some great feedback from an existing customer that explained the problem in detail .  (since it was confidential we will not use his name)

Lets call him Jim, he is a senior who’s wife liked to take the dog for a walk.
Previously they did this together, but when he walked too far Jim had problems with his knee.
They looked at all the possibilities, but the thought of a traditional mobility scooter made him cringe.
He looked at many bikes but found them hard to get on and off. He bought one of our Evolts version 2 bikes but found it difficult to control at slow speed. He wants to just ride along at 3-4 miles per hour and talk to his wife as she walked the dog just like they used to do.

He also wanted to have more control while he was re-learning to ride.
It was nearly 30 years since the last time, he was on a two wheeler. He found the power made him nervous, but didn’t want to tell his wife that it was a challenge.
He said once he was riding he also found the speedometer a little difficult to read.
While he was happy with the bike overall he said as a senior there were a few things that would make it easier.
He was now getting confident enough to go to the local shop for some small items rather than getting in the car.
Finally he told us they were discussing buying another unit for his wife to be able to go a little further afield together.
But he felt the power and speed may make it more difficult for his wife to learn to ride it.

Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters 34The feedback gave us development ideas for 2 wheel  Custom Mobility scooters.

Being a senior citizen myself, I decided to design a new design two wheel custom mobility scooter that I could test myself.
One that anyone could ride every day in comfort was easy to learn how to ride and control in different environments.

This led to the 2 wheel custom mobility scooters Evolts O3 Series. So what’s different from the standard one.

We set the criterion as follows.

  • Low center bar, easy to get on and off even if you have some hip or knee issues.
  • Lower seat so they can touch the ground easily.
  • Wide comfortable seat.
  • Full soft suspension.
  • Able to take larger people with some extra weight.
  • Easy to control the speed just using a simple switch, no gears to sort out or confuse people.
  • Three speed selections so it is easy to learn, wide tires so it is more stable at low speed.
  • Full size throttle so it is easier for people with arthritis of hand issues.
  • Larger speedometer, easier for people to read.
  • Lights and indicators so they can use it after hours and are highly visible.
  • No need for registration and also ride without a license.
  • Strong brakes with motor cut off and hydraulic so it is easy to pull the lever.
  • Able to ride up to 20mph when they are more confident.

Armed with this information we set about making these changes.

The development cycle for the 2 wheel electric mobility scooters.

Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters 35
Battery.

We began with the battery, while the battery can be recharged on the bike, it has a removable battery.  Instead of the Silicon Gel battery which is  24lb, we specified a Lithium Battery which is light around 10lb so it is easy to remove when not in use.

New LED Speedometer
Evolts-03-moped-style-seniors-custom-mobility-scooters 36

We fitted a new LED speedometer which shows larger battery capacity image making it easier to read than the previous model.

New Controller development!

Most importantly we produced a new three-speed controller, this enables the use of different speeds and power.

Setting one: set to approx. 5 MPH, while you are learning to ride again this is great to keep the bike under control. It has a decreased throttle response is to make it easier to control using this setting.
Once you are confident this setting allows people to pedal along with the bike at about 50/50% to get some exercise without straining themselves.

Electric-Moped-gears

Electric-Moped-gears

This setting also makes it easy to ride with someone walking next to you and adjust the speed with the pedals or the throttle, without the fear of taking off too fast. It’s also helpful in public areas where restricted speed is necessary.
Setting Two is set to about 10mph. Again once you get used to the bike you can increase the speed gradually, it is also useful in some public areas or in neighborhoods or communities that require you to ride at slower speeds.
Setting three is 20mph or full power, after you have been riding for a while or going up hills there are occasions you want full power.

Safety features of the 2 wheel custom mobility scooters

With the addition of the three-speed we reinforced the existing safety features, such as Hydraulic Disk front brake, horn to warn people you are approaching.
Making this bike perfect for people wanting the freedom to getting outdoors.

ELECTRIC MOPED BATTERY SIMPLIFIED INFORMATION.

We have prepared the electric moped  battery simplified information, is to help  anyone new to electric mopeds bikes.

The battery is one of the most expensive parts of an electric moped.
To get the best value when you purchase, electric mopeds it is important to understand the electric moped battery terminology.
Choosing the correct electric moped battery can make a difference for purchase value, electric moped range or for battery life.

Electric Mopeds are used for many different purposes, so they may require different types of electric moped battery and different battery specification.

Since many people are unfamiliar with with the Electric Moped battery, we will try to simplify the description of the battery.
At the same time  we will try to explain the definition and usages of the electric moped battery technology.

SIMPLE BATTERY TERMINOLOGY

VOLTAGE:

Generally speaking the easiest way to describe Volts it that it gives the Electric Moped its  power or torque.
In simple terms the higher voltage the greater ability to provide power to the motor.
For many smaller Electric Mopeds the general rule is 48 Volts as a minimum with options for 60 Volts.
You may notice voltage is generally measured in 12 Volt segments.
Hence 48 volts is 4 X 12 Volt batteries or equivalent individual cells, if it is a Lithium battery.

AmpH: (ALSO KNOWN AS AMP HOUR.)

The simple explanation of AmpH, Amp hour, is it provides the electric moped the range or distance,
Generally the greater the AmpH the longer range.
The measurement is the storage capacity of the battery.
20 AmpH stands the amount of energy that can flow through the battery in one hour before it runs flat.

POPULAR BATTERY TYPES.

BASIC DESCRIPTION OF ELECTRIC SCOOTER BATTERY TYPES:

A. SEALED LEAD ACID BATTERY (SLA)

Electric moped battery information, you can understand. 37

Lead Acid Electric Moped Battery

The sealed lead acid batteries have been around for a very long time.
They are the basic type of battery that you will find in any car or truck.
They need to generate the very high current in short bursts required for starting an engine, the auto industry has been relying on them for years.

As they are the oldest type, they were also the first to be used in electric mopeds when they were released.
Today, they continue to be the most popularly batteries in many low cost electric mopeds because of their cost and  power.

The main drawback of the SLA battery has to be their heavy weight. They are also large. That said, they are less expensive compared to Lithium batteries and they are also readily available. That is the main reason they continue being used in electric Mopeds.

It is worth noting that how long a sealed acid battery lasts really depends on the surrounding temperatures as well as its size and quality.

B. GEL CELL BATTERY (GEL)

The Silica Gel cell are similar to the Lead Acid batteries and have been available for a  long time.

The difference is they are fully sealed and use Silica Gel instead of Lead Acid.
Gel batteries are made with thicker plates than other batteries also there is no liquid to spill or refill.

Generally the Silica Gel batteries have a longer life and the added advantage of ability to be placed on their side not just upright.
They continue to be popular batteries in many electric scooters because of their economical cost and the power they generate.
Silica Gel batteries are inert, which means they can not catch fire, so present little risk during use or charging.

Lithium Ion is a lightweight battery with longer life and range.

Lithium ion batteries are quickly becoming the industry standard even though they are the most expensive.

Because of the advantages, with light  weight, increased range and longer life many people are willing to pay extra money to fit this option to their Electric Moped.

Lithium batteries have a major advantage over other types of batteries due to the weight advantage which is about a 1/3 the weigh of other batteries.

Lithium batteries also last about three times longer than ta regular Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) and Silica Gel (Gel) batteries.

Although this increases the cost of electric moped manufacturers.
Many incorporate them to be able to increase the warranty period compared the Lead acid and Silica Gel batteries.

Li-ion battery tech is also popular because  they require less maintenance when not in use.
They do not suffer from the “battery memory” and you can basically ignore them for long stretches of time without a problem.

As a result of these advantages Electric Moped battery, Scooter and bike Li Ion Batteries they are turning up in markets.

They are also light enough to be used for removable Electric moped Battery enabling the battery to be charged away from the Electric Moped.

The downside, their price is often much higher than that of the sealed lead acid battery and Gel battery.
In fact with modern electric Mopeds a large part of the price is likely to be the cost of the battery. In somce cases a much as 1/2 of the cost of the total Electric Moped or bike.

CONCLUSION:

The main factors in choosing a battery type are Cost, Speed, Climbing ability, range and Electric Moped Battery Life.

All of these factors should have bearing on the choice of Electric Moped Battery Pack necessary for the model you want to use.

If you need to ride longer distances and more climbing the Electric Scooter Lithium Battery Pack would probably best suit your needs.

However if you do not use your Electric Moped often or do not need a removable electric moped battery the economical Silica GEL or Lead Acid may suit your requirements.

In many cases you can perform a battery upgrade at a later date if you have battery problems.

Keep in mind you may also need a different charger as different batteries use different charging cycles.

We hope this Electric moped Simplified battery information was helpful to understand the terminology and battery types.
